Experiments in Quantum Frequency Detection Using Quantum Fourier Transform

Abstract

In this chapter, we will walk through our experiments in utilizing the Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) to analyze a single frequency audio file and a personal MIDI rendition of Bach’s Cello Suite Prelude, BWV-1007 on simulated and real IBM Quantum (IBM Q) backends. We will begin by giving a brief history of the famous Fourier Transform as well as the nomenclature surrounding its derivative forms. This will lead to some quantum computing basics and derivations of the QFT in different contexts. From there, we will give a breakdown of our testing methodologies and results. Finally, we will conclude by speaking on some of the potential musical and scientific applications of using the QFT for signal analysis.
